A General Service Unit (GSU) officer attached to the office of Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has been charged with the murder of a nurse who was allegedly shot dead in what investigators suspect was a love-triangle dispute.
Nathan Kirwa appeared before Eldoret High Court Judge Anthony Ndungu on Wednesday and denied murdering 45-year-old Doris Murei, popularly known as Dori.
Kirwa was presented in court after a mental assessment conducted at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital found him fit to stand trial.
The prosecution alleges that Kirwa murdered Murei on August 30, 2026, at a GSU canteen near the Eldoret State Lodge in Uasin Gishu County.
According to the prosecution case, the officer was later arrested along the Southern Bypass in the Kapseret area following a six-hour police manhunt after he was linked to the fatal shooting.
Police allege that Kirwa arrived at a pub while armed with a concealed firearm before approaching Murei and opening fire.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani previously confirmed the shooting, saying the officer allegedly fired several rounds at the nurse.
“He went straight to the lady whose name is Doris Murei, who is popularly known as Dori, and began shooting her. He shot her five times,” Sicharani said.
The prosecution further alleges that the officer repeatedly aimed his pistol at Murei during the incident.
Murei died at the scene from gunshot injuries.
Her death sparked concern in Uasin Gishu, with the circumstances surrounding the shooting attracting significant public attention because of the accused officer’s connection to the governor’s security team.
The accused has, however, not been convicted. He remains entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until the prosecution proves the murder charge beyond reasonable doubt.
Murei was later laid to rest at her husband’s home in Chemalingot, Tiaty Sub-County, Baringo County.
After taking his plea, Justice Ndungu directed that Kirwa be escorted to Eldoret GK Prison pending a ruling on his application for release on bond.
The court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on the bond application on October 15, 2026.
The murder case will thereafter proceed in accordance with directions issued by the High Court.
