Five Suspects Detained for 14 Days Over Murder of Eldoret Hotel Manager

An Eldoret court has allowed police to detain five suspects, including a couple, for 14 days to allow detectives to complete investigations into the brutal murder of a hotel manager in Ainabkoi Sub-County, Uasin Gishu County.
Eldoret Resident Magistrate Naima Chelagat on Tuesday granted the application by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to hold Allan Kiprotich, Elvis Ambani, Jackson Sifuna, Fredrick Seroney and Betty Jeptoo for two weeks pending further investigations.
The five were arrested in connection with the murder of a hotel manager identified as Sema, whose body was found near Kipkorgot Centre, a short distance from his vehicle, on the morning of August 7, 2026. Police believe the deceased was attacked on the night of August 6, 2026.
Presenting the miscellaneous application before court, the investigating officer told the court that detectives need more time to tie up crucial evidence, including recovering the suspected murder weapon, recording statements from key witnesses, obtaining mobile phone communication data, and conducting forensic analysis of blood samples collected from the scene.
The officer also told the court that the suspects are expected to undergo mental status assessments before they are formally charged, a mandatory procedure in murder investigations.
According to police reports, the deceased was allegedly assaulted near a home in Kipkorgot before being killed. His body was later discovered lying by the roadside near Kipkorgot Centre, prompting residents to alert the police.
Following intelligence leads, detectives traced the suspects to a home at Tuiyot Farm in Kipkorgot Location, where Allan Kiprotich Tuiyot and his partner Betty Jeptoo Bii were arrested. The other three suspects — Elvis Ambani, Jackson Sifuna and Fredrick Seroney — were later arrested from different locations within Eldoret.
The court heard that preliminary investigations point to a possible altercation that may have led to the fatal assault, although detectives are yet to establish the motive.
Magistrate Chelagat, in her ruling, said the prosecution had demonstrated sufficient grounds to warrant detention of the suspects, noting the seriousness of the offence and the need for thorough investigations.
“The court is satisfied that the investigating officer requires more time to complete investigations, including forensic examination and recovery of exhibits. The suspects will be detained at the Eldoret Central Police Station for 14 days,” she ruled.
The case will be mentioned on August 25, 2026, when detectives are expected to give a progress report and further directions will be issued.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased was moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) mortuary in Eldoret for post-mortem examination as family and friends continue to demand justice.
The murder has shocked residents and the hospitality industry in Eldoret, where the deceased was described as a hardworking and friendly manager.
