TSC Announces 20,000 Permanent and Pensionable Jobs for Junior School Teachers

In a major boost to thousands of qualified but unemployed teachers, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced the recruitment of 20,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms to serve in junior schools across the country.
The announcement, made on Monday, comes as a huge relief to many teachers who have been working on internship terms or waiting for years for absorption into the public payroll. The new positions are specifically for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), which has been facing acute staffing challenges since its rollout.
According to a circular from the Commission, the recruitment exercise will be conducted exclusively online. TSC has clarified that no manual or physical applications will be accepted. All interested and qualified candidates are required to submit their applications through the official TSC website – www.tsc.go.ke – or via the Teachers Online Portal – teachersonline.tsc.go.ke.
The application window will officially open on August 18, 2026, and will close at midnight on August 31, 2026. The Commission has urged all prospective applicants to adhere strictly to the timelines, warning that late applications will not be considered.
“The Commission invites applications from qualified teachers for 20,000 posts on Permanent and Pensionable terms for Junior Schools. Interested candidates should apply online within the stipulated period,” the notice reads in part.
The recruitment is part of the government’s ongoing deliberate efforts to strengthen the teaching workforce in junior schools and improve learning outcomes under the CBC. The Ministry of Education has previously acknowledged that junior schools are understaffed, with many schools relying on primary school teachers and interns to handle Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners.
The additional 20,000 teachers are expected to significantly reduce the teacher-learner ratio, enhance quality of education, and ease the workload currently borne by JSS teachers across the country.
TSC has advised applicants to carefully review the advertised requirements and ensure that all necessary documents, including academic and professional certificates, ID, and TSC registration certificate, are uploaded correctly before submitting their applications.
The Commission has also cautioned candidates against falling prey to fraudsters and middlemen claiming to influence the recruitment process. It emphasized that the entire exercise is free of charge and that candidates should only rely on official TSC communication channels for authentic updates.
The announcement is expected to attract massive interest, particularly from recent university graduates and teachers who have been serving as interns in junior schools under the internship program.
Successful applicants will be posted to junior schools across all 47 counties based on staffing needs, merit, and the Commission’s deployment guidelines. Details on subject combinations, county vacancies and eligibility criteria are expected to be published when the portal goes live on August 18.
TSC has encouraged interested applicants to start preparing their documents in advance to avoid last-minute network congestion and technical hitches that often characterize online applications close to the deadline.
