New mothers and their babies at Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital have received a boost after the NGO Empowering the African Woman (ETAW) donated essential maternal and neonatal care supplies to support families during the postnatal period.

The donation, handed over at the hospital, is intended to ease some of the challenges faced by mothers after childbirth while ensuring newborns have access to basic necessities required for a healthy start in life. The initiative reflects a commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare and supporting vulnerable families in the community.

Among the items provided were baby clothes, diapers and clothing for mothers recovering after delivery. Hospital officials said the supplies will help improve the comfort and well-being of both mothers and infants during their stay at the facility.

The handover ceremony was attended by healthcare workers from different departments as well as representatives from ETAW. Those present included Amilia Ngoda, the nurse in charge of the Newborn Unit, Wilson Munene from the Medical Social Work Department and Rosalinda Munyendo from the Postnatal Ward.

Hospital staff expressed gratitude to ETAW for the donation, noting that such contributions play an important role in complementing healthcare services offered at the facility.

“We appreciate this generous support, which helps us provide additional care and comfort to mothers and newborns, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds,” hospital representatives said.

They added that while the hospital continues to offer quality maternal and neonatal healthcare services, partnerships with organizations and well-wishers help address gaps and improve patient welfare.

The donation is expected to benefit many mothers and infants admitted to the postnatal and newborn units, especially families who may struggle to access essential baby care items. By providing these supplies, ETAW is helping create a more supportive and dignified environment for mothers as they begin caring for their newborns.

The initiative also underscores the importance of collaboration between healthcare institutions and community organizations in strengthening healthcare delivery and supporting vulnerable groups beyond clinical treatment.

Vihiga Teaching and Referral Hospital reaffirmed its commitment to promoting safe motherhood, reducing neonatal risks and improving health outcomes for mothers and children across the county. The facility also encouraged continued partnerships that enhance patient welfare and service delivery.

Officials noted that the collaboration between ETAW and the hospital demonstrates how community support and collective action can positively impact the lives of mothers and newborns, ensuring children are welcomed into the world with dignity and care.
