Health journalist Christopher Kipsang of Willow Health Media has been recognized as Journalist of the Year in the Health Category during a gala ceremony organized by the Media Council of Kenya.
Kipsang earned the award for his feature story titled *“Care in Transit: How Mobile Medical Camps are Saving Lives in Turkana,” * which explored how mobile healthcare outreach initiatives are improving access to treatment for residents living in remote parts of Turkana.
The report focused on the growing importance of mobile medical camps in areas where access to hospitals and healthcare facilities remains a major challenge. Through interviews, field reporting, and human-interest storytelling, the feature highlighted the experiences of families and patients who rely on outreach medical services for treatment, maternal healthcare, immunization, and health education.
The judges commended the story for shedding light on healthcare inequalities affecting marginalized communities while also showcasing efforts being made to improve medical access in underserved regions.
Speaking shortly after receiving the award, Kipsang expressed gratitude for the recognition and described the achievement as a motivation to continue producing stories that create impact in society.
“Another reason to say God thank you,” Kipsang said moments after he was announced as the winner.
He also acknowledged the contribution of editors, colleagues, mentors, and members of the community who shared their experiences during the reporting process.
“This recognition is not only about me. It is about every person who trusted me with their story and every colleague who supported the work behind the scenes,” he said.

Kipsang noted that health journalism remains an important pillar in informing the public about critical issues affecting communities across the country.
“This award encourages me to keep telling stories that matter — stories that give hope, expose challenges, and inspire solutions,” he added.
His award-winning feature documented how healthcare workers travel across difficult terrain to reach patients living far from established medical facilities. The story also highlighted the dedication of medical teams providing essential services to communities that often struggle with limited resources and inadequate healthcare infrastructure.
According to the judges, the report stood out because of its depth, public interest value, and strong storytelling approach. They noted that the feature demonstrated how journalism can be used to raise awareness, promote accountability, and bring attention to pressing healthcare concerns.
The recognition marks a major milestone for both Kipsang and Willow Health Media, further strengthening the platform’s reputation in health and development reporting.
The annual journalism awards organized by the Media Council of Kenya celebrate outstanding work by journalists across different categories. The awards honour media professionals whose reporting demonstrates ethical journalism, public service, and storytelling that contributes to positive social change.
