Jane Marindich, Deputy Dean of Students at Eldoret National Polytechnic, has called for urgent measures to safeguard the well-being of children living in prisons alongside their mothers.
Speaking after a visit to Eldoret Women Prison, Marindich emphasized that these children are innocent and deserve proper care, protection, and opportunities for healthy development.
“These children have committed no offense, yet they are confined in prison environments. They deserve better care and opportunities to grow,” she said.
She acknowledged the efforts made by prison authorities in maintaining the facility but noted that children require stimulation, play, and social interaction to develop fully needs that are difficult to meet within a confined environment.
Marindich further urged the government to explore alternative sentencing options, such as community service for mothers with young children. She explained that such approaches would allow mothers to serve their sentences outside prison while raising their children in a more supportive environment.
She stressed that addressing this issue is critical to ensuring the healthy growth and future of the affected children.
During the visit, Marindich also noted that they donated essential items to the women’s prison, working in collaboration with the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association. The initiative aimed at supporting incarcerated mothers and improving the welfare of children living within the facility
