A court has granted police 14 days to detain two suspects arrested with an illegal firearm along the Kisumu–Busia Highway, as investigations into the incident continue.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the National Police Service said Evans Otieno Ongere and Abel Onyango Owuor were arraigned before the Principal Magistrate’s Court in Vihiga, where detectives secured custodial orders to facilitate further inquiries.

The two were arrested during an operation on April 26 after officers intercepted a black Toyota Prado along the Kisumu–Busia Highway and recovered a Phantom pistol, a machete, and several mobile phones.

Police confirmed that the firearm has since been forwarded to the National Forensic Laboratory for ballistic analysis.

“The suspects were presented in court, and detectives obtained a 14-day custodial order to allow completion of investigations,” police said.

In a separate but related case, a suspect identified as Christopher Okello, who was rescued from a mob after being found in possession of a bow and arrow, was also arraigned in court.

He pleaded not guilty and was released on a bond of Ksh100,000, with the case scheduled for mention on May 14, 2026.

Police urged the public to rely on verified information, dismissing claims circulating online that alleged inaction by authorities.

“Investigations are ongoing, and members of the public are advised to verify information and disregard misleading reports,” the statement added.

Authorities say the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal firearms and enhance security along key transport corridors.
