Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) has enhanced its surgical and critical care capacity following the acquisition of a new consignment of advanced medical equipment aimed at strengthening specialised healthcare services.
Acting Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joshua Okise, who officially received the consignment, said the upgrade is expected to improve efficiency, patient safety, and overall clinical outcomes at the Level 6A national referral hospital.
The hospital received 92 line items supplied by Sunview Medipro International Limited, replacing equipment that has been in use for over a decade.
“This modernisation is essential for a facility of our level. It improves reliability and enables us to offer the specialised services our region requires,” Dr. Okise said during the handover ceremony attended by board members Grace Essendi and Dr. Zablon Mokua.
He explained that the upgrade is part of a broader effort to standardise the surgical wing and introduce interoperability between machines and central monitoring systems.
“With this integration, we expect reduced downtime, improved workflow, and better coordination of care, especially in critical units,” he added, noting that the improvements are expected to enhance recovery times and reduce mortality rates.
Among the new equipment are six Mindray HyBase V3 operating tables and five HyLED C5-C5 surgical lights designed for complex surgical procedures.
“The operating tables provide advanced positioning for orthopedic and general surgeries, while the lighting minimises tissue dehydration during prolonged operations,” Dr. Okise said.
He further noted that the modular tables feature one-click repositioning technology, which reduces turnaround time between procedures and increases the hospital’s daily surgical capacity.
To enhance anesthesia safety, JOOTRH has also installed six new anesthesia machines alongside six Mindray EP 300 electrosurgical platforms.
“These systems ensure precise ventilation and controlled delivery of anesthetic agents, which is especially critical for pediatric and high-risk patients,” he said.
The upgrade marks a significant step in strengthening specialised care delivery at the facility, which serves as a key referral hospital for the wider western Kenya region.
