Wetlands Vital for Livelihoods and Health
The Governor of Machakos Wavinya Ndeti has issued a warning that wetland destruction creates dangerous conditions which endanger the safety of local residents especially women and children. The Governor spoke during the World Wetlands Day event at Mutaki Dam located in Mua Hills, where he explained that wetland destruction forces residents to travel long distances to obtain water which causes people to become sick and interrupts their work activities and leads to an increase in poverty.
County to Conduct Wetlands Inventory and Mapping
Governor Ndeti designated Chief Officer for Environment Simon Kitheka to lead a complete wetland inventory and mapping project across all areas of Machakos County. The exercise aims to guide restoration efforts, promote sustainable use, and ensure proper planning of ecosystems in alignment with national environmental policies.
Commitment to Conservation and Sustainable Management
The Governor confirmed that the county government will protect springs and rivers and wetlands for both present and future generations. The county will implement key projects that include water harvesting and conservation initiatives, environmental protection community education programs, and environmental law enforcement activities which will be executed with national government agencies and other stakeholders.
Wetlands as Buffers Against Climate Risks
“Wetlands cushion our communities against drought, protect us during floods, support food security, and strengthen livelihoods,” Governor Ndeti said, while he established environmental conservation as the main element which supports Machakos County’s entire development strategy.
The Governor uses his remarks to show how wetlands provide strategic value by enabling sustainable development while helping communities withstand climate-related challenges and maintain their rightful access to natural resources.
