Sudan is facing a growing humanitarian crisis with severe hunger reported in some parts of the country amid escalating violence that has left several people dead. The International Food Security Monitoring Group, IPC, has sounded a warning in an urgent alert that two regions in Sudan have reached critical levels of hunger.
Famine conditions are currently affecting El-Fasher in western Darfur and Kadugli in South Kordofan, according to reports from the IPC. If left unaddressed, millions of residents in these areas risk starvation and malnutrition, adding to the already dire situation, authorities and humanitarian agencies warn.
Compounding the crisis, doctors in Sudan reported that seven people were killed in a drone strike targeting a children’s hospital, with victims including women and children. The attack drew international condemnation and raised urgent concerns over the protection of civilians and medical facilities in conflict zones. The strike has left hospitals struggling to care for patients amidst insecurity and limited resources.
The International Criminal Court has weighed in, warning that the ongoing violence in El-Fasher could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The statement by the ICC highlights the possibility of accountability for those responsible in the attacks against civilians and critical infrastructure in the ongoing conflict.
Humanitarian organizations report that thousands of people have fled El Fasher, which reportedly fell to RSF militants. Many of the displaced are seeking shelter in overcrowded shelters and struggling to access basic services such as food, water, and medical care. Aid agencies warn that humanitarian response remains constrained by continued insecurity and challenges to reaching affected areas.
The armed conflict coupled with food insecurity compounds the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, leaving many civilians at risk. Local authorities, international organizations, and advocacy groups call for urgent humanitarian assistance while seeking an end to the attacks against civilians and essential services.
The present situation underlines the urgent need for international attention and coordinated relief efforts to avoid a further loss of life. Unless immediate action is taken, experts caution, famine could spread beyond El-Fasher and Kadugli, imperiling additional populations and deepening the country’s ongoing suffering. With Sudan facing conflict and a severe hunger emergency, the international community continues to closely monitor ongoing developments, calling for accountability for attacks against civilians and robust measures in response to the humanitarian crisis affecting millions of innocent people.
