Former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi on Wednesday visited the Bondo home of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to offer their condolences to his family. The two leaders arrived early in the morning at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Siaya County, where they laid wreaths at Raila’s final resting place before proceeding to his Opoda Farm residence to meet his widow, Mama Ida Odinga.

They were received by members of the Odinga family, among them Raila Odinga Junior, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, and Siaya Governor James Orengo. The visitors were briefed on the family’s ongoing mourning arrangements and later joined other dignitaries who had gathered to pay their respects.

During the visit, Gideon Moi spoke emotionally about his personal friendship with the late Raila Odinga, describing him as a visionary leader, freedom fighter, and an unwavering advocate for democracy. “I remember Mzee Raila with great admiration and affection. He was a man of principle who stood firm for justice and unity,” Moi said. He recalled their last meeting, noting that it was filled with laughter and optimism. “We had promised to meet again when he returned, but God had other plans,” he added.

Moi went on to express that Raila’s passing had left a deep void not only in Kenya but across Africa, where his contributions to democratic governance and reform had inspired generations of leaders. “The continent has lost a true statesman and patriot. His courage and conviction will remain an inspiration to many,” he stated.

After the solemn wreath-laying ceremony, Akufo-Addo and Moi joined other mourners at Opoda Farm, where they conveyed messages of sympathy and solidarity to Mama Ida and the rest of the Odinga family. Among those present were Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, and COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, who also shared comforting words with the bereaved family.

Later in the afternoon, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi arrived in Bondo to pay his respects, underscoring the continued flow of visitors to the Odinga home. Over the past few weeks, the residence has become a center of pilgrimage for mourners from within Kenya and beyond, all seeking to honor Raila Odinga’s remarkable legacy.

Raila Odinga, who passed away at the age of 80, was laid to rest two weeks ago at his ancestral home in line with his wish for a modest and private ceremony. His passing has drawn tributes from across the world, with many leaders describing him as one of Kenya’s most influential political figures — a man whose lifelong pursuit of democracy and justice profoundly shaped the nation’s history.
