Kianyaga FC Storms into Finals of Governor Waiguru’s Minji Minji Cup

Kianyaga Football Club (FC) have reached the finals of Governor Anne Waiguru’s Minji Minji Football Cup after they beat Kiburu FC in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout. The heart-stopping semi-final at Mwea GK Prisons Grounds ended 1-1 during normal time before Kianyaga triumphed from the spot.

Road to the Finals
Kianyaga FC will subsequently play Kiamaina FC or Kaitheri FC in the final on Sunday at Wang’uru Stadium. The top prize will be divided equally between the winning team to the value of KSh 1.5 million, while runners-up will get KSh 1 million. Third and fourth-placed teams will get KSh 750,000 and KSh 500,000 respectively.

Players React
Team captain Dennis Kariuki credited Governor Waiguru for initiating the tournament, saying it has greatly inspired youths. “We thank the governor for this opportunity. It has brought the youths together and provided us with hope. We are determined to win the grand prize,” he said.

Despite the defeat, Kiburu FC captain Kennedy Maina was beaming with pride over the performance of his team. “We have toiled to reach the semi-finals. Although we did not reach the finals, we are proud of our effort and appreciate the experience,” he asserted.

Controversy in Second Semi-Final
The second semi-final between Kaitheri FC and Kiamaina FC was halted in the second half after a disagreement over a penalty against Kiamaina. The officials ensured that the match was to be replayed later in the week to determine Kianyaga’s final opponent.

Tournament Impact
County Executive Committee Member for Sports Dennis Musyimi commended the tournament, stating it has engaged young people in a positive way. “This tournament has been wonderful. It’s not football—it’s about giving young people direction and keeping them away from drugs and crime,” he added.

Minji Minji Football Cup, initiated by Governor Anne Waiguru, has turned out to be one of the largest grassroots sports events in Kenya. It continues to be a very large platform for the development of football skills and also promoting unity, discipline, and community development among the youth.
