Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen have called former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to formalize a statement on terrorism allegations he made while overseas in the United States. This follows there was growing tension and public curiosity over the dynamics and repercussions of the statements of Gachagua during his international tour.
To respond to Sitotwo Primary School where they were raising funds in an effort to empower women and boda boda riders, Kindiki and Murkomen labeled Gachagua’s statements as alarming and detrimental to the security of the nation. Kindiki criticized Gachagua for what he referred to as irresponsible statements about Kenya’s security outside the country, warning that such utterances could destabilize the nation.
“There is nothing wrong with leaders going abroad, but they must always be patriotic. Governments change, but Kenya remains. No one should trade national security for the sake of criticizing the leadership,” Kindiki asserted.
He also added that Gachagua would be required to defend the reasons behind his terrorism claims when he returns. “If he had credible terrorism information, he should have reported it. Matters of national security can’t be politicized into drama,” Kindiki said.
Murkomen agreed, saying that Gachagua must be compelled to account for what he has uttered and provide a complete explanation of what he is asserting he knows about terror groups such as Al-Shabaab. “We expect him to present a detailed statement the moment he comes back to the country,” he continued.
Elgeyo Marakwet’s parliamentarians, including Woman Rep Caroline Ng’elechei and MPs Gideon Kimaiyo, Adams Kipsanai, and Kangogo Bowen, joined in solidarity with the clamor for accountability.
Kindiki also defended the development record of President Ruto, confirming that much has been accomplished in less than three years and urged citizens to support a second term. He was also hopeful in Murkomen‘s capacity to combat banditry in regions like Kerio Valley, drawn from past efforts at peace and sustained investment in security, such as a KSh12 billion security personnel modernization program.
