Donald Trump has set up a new task force to oversee preparations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The Republican president told Tuesday that he would chair the group, while Vice President JD Vance would serve as its vice-chair.
Task force will cooperate with federal agencies in ensuring safety and the freedom of operation during the Games. Trump said that his administration will use “any measures necessary” to secure the event, including potentially deploying the National Guard or the army.

The move comes after a tense standoff in June when Trump ordered California’s National Guard to mobilize to react to Los Angeles protests. The action defied Governor Gavin Newsom and brought outrage from state and city officials.

Trump fueled his war with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Tuesday, calling her “not very competent.” He had already made snipes at her response to the wildfires last spring.

Despite political tensions, Trump was joined by Casey Wasserman, the chairman of the 2028 Olympics organizing committee, to the White House for the announcement. Wasserman appreciated Trump’s backing of the Games and expressed that the event could not be held without federal assistance.

He presented Trump with samples of medals from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and extended an invitation for him to join in on the upcoming torch relay. “For the first time ever, the Olympic torch relay will travel to all 50 states,” Wasserman remarked. “You’re welcome to run once again on Park Avenue, just as you did before the 2004 Athens Games.”

The 2028 Olympics come during Trump’s second term, who will also be hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Trump, adamant on his anti-transgender athlete position, reiterated that he would support strict regulations against “men competing in women’s sports.” He also proposed strict genetic testing policy for the athletes who want to compete.

Los Angeles, which is a Democratic city, has had repeated confrontations with Trump’s administration. The creation of this task force may enable Trump to have greater authority over one of the world’s largest sporting events.

The task force will be assisted by coordinating with federal agencies so that the event will be safe and run smoothly during the Games. According to Trump, his administration will do “any necessary steps” to guarantee the event, including using the National Guard or military troops if necessary.

This follows a June standoff when Trump ordered California’s National Guard to be sent to Los Angeles during demonstrations. The action defied Governor Gavin Newsom’s calls and irritated state and city officials.

The city of Los Angeles, which is governed by Democrats, has been constantly at odds with Trump’s administration. The creation of this task force could give Trump more authority over one of the world’s largest sporting events.
