Former ICT Cabinet Secretary Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u has secured a new international job as a Senior Researcher and Digital Policy Expert on the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) Safeguards Strategic Advisory Board. This is an international initiative under the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
In a LinkedIn message, Nyambura appreciated the appointment and looked forward to contributing her expertise towards ensuring responsible digital infrastructure governance.
“I am honored to be among the great minds on the DPI Safeguards Strategic Advisory Board, led by UNDP and ODET. Together, we aspire to shape policy, stimulate collaborations, and assist countries in building safeguards into their systems for inclusivity,” she said.
The core mandate of the Advisory Board is to offer independent counsel on the deployment of the digital infrastructure framework, coordinating its deployment at the national level, and charting its direction into the future. Among its responsibilities is rallying stakeholders, countering new digital threats, and sensitizing the public on safe digital transformation.
Nyambura further indicated that she will employ her vast networks at the national, continental, and international levels to pursue awareness about the importance and impact of the framework.
Having a strong IT background, she has immense experience in internet infrastructure, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cybersecurity, and data governance. She has also contributed significantly to the African Union’s digital transition agenda in sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture.
Among her accomplishments are the development and implementation of the African Union Data Policy Framework, creating an online Internet Governance course that is being utilized by 30 regional and national schools throughout Africa, and creating a 10-module digital literacy curriculum for the Pan African University Institute.
Before that in her career, Nyambura had worked as a consultant in the ICT Authority of the Education Ministry and Senior Research Manager for Gender Justice in STEM Research in Africa (GeJuSTA).
Hired into President William Ruto‘s Cabinet in 2024 Gen Z protests, she served as ICT CS for a short time before being removed by former Kiambu Governor William Kabogo. She was then nominated to be Kenya’s High Commissioner to Ghana but declined the position for personal and family reasons.
