Bungoma High School, one of Western Kenya’s rugby powerhouses, have issued a strong statement of intent ahead of the 2025 National Secondary Schools Rugby 7s Championships after clinching the Western Region title with a commanding 17-0 victory over archrivals Vihiga High School.

The showdown, held at Friends School Kamusinga in Trans Nzoia County, was billed as a clash of titans — and Bungoma Boys didn’t disappoint.

Playing with tactical discipline, physical dominance, and explosive speed, they outclassed their opponents in every department to claim the regional title and punch their ticket to the national stage.

Bungoma’s journey to the final was nothing short of impressive. They topped their group with back-to-back wins, including a 19-5 triumph over St. Peter’s Mumias and a hard-fought 12-7 win against Kimilili Boys.

In the semi-finals, they brushed aside Butula Boys 14-0 in a performance that highlighted their defensive organization and attacking prowess.
Coach Peter Akhwale credited the team’s success to intense preparation, discipline, and teamwork.

“This has been months in the making. We’ve drilled the basics, built fitness, and focused on mental strength. The boys are hungry and focused, and this win is a reflection of their hard work. But our journey is not over — our eyes are on the national title,” said Akhwale.

Among the standout performers was team captain Brian Wekesa, whose leadership and vision on the pitch earned praise from fans and coaches alike.

Winger Kevin Simiyu also drew attention with his pace and ability to exploit gaps in the opposition’s defense, scoring crucial tries in both the semis and the final.

Fly-half Amos Wafula orchestrated play brilliantly, combining sharp distribution with clever kicks that kept Bungoma on the front foot.
The national championships are set to be held in Kakamega from August 7–11, 2025, attracting top regional qualifiers from across Kenya.

Schools such as Nairobi’s Upper Hill, Kisii High, Dagoretti High, Lenana School, and Menengai High from the Rift Valley are all expected to feature.

With their flawless defense — not conceding a single try in the knockout phase — and a sharp attacking line, Bungoma High now heads to the nationals as one of the tournament favorites.

The team’s success has also rallied support from the Bungoma High School alumni network and local community, many of whom took to social media to celebrate the win and urge the team to “bring the trophy home.”

“This win has rekindled the school spirit. We know what Bungoma Boys can do. Let’s now focus on Kakamega and make history,” said an alumnus from the class of 2012.

Bungoma last reached the national final in 2019, narrowly losing to Kakamega High School. This year, with their current momentum and renewed spirit, they are aiming not just to make the final — but to lift the trophy and write a new chapter in their rugby legacy.
