The Eldoret High Court is set to deliver a sentencing verdict today for Evans Juma Wanjala, a self-confessed serial killer convicted of murdering five minors in Moi’s Bridge, Uasin Gishu County.

Justice Reuben Nyakundi, who presided over the case, found Wanjala guilty of the heinous crimes, which involved the defilement and strangulation of children aged between 10 and 15 years.

Following the guilty verdict, Justice Nyakundi ordered that Wanjala be held at Eldoret GK Remand Prison until his sentencing. The court’s decision comes after chilling confessions made by Wanjala to detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Nairobi.

His detailed accounts revealed the brutal manner in which he defiled and strangled his victims, with evidence presented by the DCI outlining the gruesome details of the murders.

A key focus of the trial was the murder of 10-year-old Stacy Nabiso, killed six years ago. Justice Nyakundi’s ruling relied heavily on forensic evidence, including a medical report and DNA analysis, which confirmed that samples from the victim’s t-shirt and underwear matched Wanjala’s DNA. Forensic experts were among the key witnesses in the high-profile trial.

During the proceedings, Wanjala attempted to negotiate a plea bargain with the victim’s family, a request that was firmly rejected. Sharon Sakwa, Stacy Nabiso’s mother, described the application as a mockery, emphasizing the immense pain and horror her daughter endured. Sakwa, who lost her only child, expressed the profound grief her family continues to bear.

The court also heard that Wanjala faces three additional pending charges related to sexual offenses in Makindu, where arrest warrants have been issued.

The sentencing is expected to draw significant attention, as the case has shocked the nation and highlighted the devastating impact of violent crimes against children.
