A mural featuring Spanish footballer Nico Williams was defaced just 15 hours after it was restored in Bilbao, raising tensions among fans still upset over the player’s impending move to FC Barcelona, Saturday, June 28.

The artwork, originally depicting Nico and his brother Iñaki Williams—both stars of Athletic Club—was altered last week when Nico’s image was removed following reports of his transfer to Barcelona.

The act triggered backlash from supporters and local residents who saw it as a sign of disrespect toward the Williams family and their contributions to the club.

In response to the public criticism, the mural was fully restored earlier this week. Local artists and fans came together to repaint Nico’s likeness, emphasizing unity and gratitude toward the brothers’ legacy in Bilbao.

However, vandals struck again early Saturday morning, damaging the mural shortly after its restoration. The fresh defacement underscores lingering resentment among segments of the fanbase still reeling from Nico’s potential departure to a major rival.

“This isn’t just about a football transfer,” said local resident María Etxebarria. “It’s about identity and loyalty. For many fans, it feels personal.”

Authorities are reviewing security footage to identify the culprits. Meanwhile, Athletic Club has not issued a formal statement on the repeated vandalism, though club officials are believed to be monitoring the situation closely.
