The County Government of Uasin Gishu has officially launched the Dorper sheep distribution program in Kapsaos Ward, a strategic move aimed at improving livestock breeding, increasing productivity, and raising household incomes for local farmers.
The rollout was led by Deputy Governor H.E. Evans Kapkea, accompanied by Chief Officer for Livestock Development Nixon Cheplong and area MCA Isaac Samoei.

This initiative is part of the county’s broader livestock improvement plan, which seeks to enhance farming through the introduction of superior Dorper breeds — a fast-growing, hardy, and highly marketable variety of sheep.
“We are empowering farmers with quality breeds that increase meat production, adapt well to our climate, and offer better financial returns,” said Deputy Governor Kapkea. “This isn’t just about agriculture — it’s about strengthening food security and fueling rural economic growth.”
Dorper sheep are widely praised for their rapid growth rates, resistance to diseases, and high meat yield, making them an ideal breed for local farmers seeking sustainable livestock ventures.
Chief Officer Cheplong noted the significant role that improved animal genetics play in the growth of the livestock sector. He emphasized that the Dorper distribution will extend to other wards, forming a key part of the county’s long-term livestock development strategy.
“This is a game-changing program,” Cheplong remarked. “The Dorper breed will play a major role in elevating sheep farming standards across Uasin Gishu.”
MCA Isaac Samoei lauded the county’s commitment to agricultural transformation and encouraged farmers to take full advantage of the initiative. He urged them to adopt proper animal husbandry practices to ensure the sustainability and long-term success of the program.
“This opportunity must not be wasted,” Samoei said. “Let’s invest in good livestock care and make this a turning point for farming in our ward.”
The Dorper sheep distribution aligns with Governor Jonathan Bii’s “Nguzo Kumi” development agenda, which prioritizes agriculture, economic empowerment, and inclusive service delivery.
This program reflects Uasin Gishu’s commitment to grassroots development and shows how smart agricultural investments can drive both food security and community wealth.
