The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched an intensive investigation into the mysterious and tragic death of Father John Maina, a Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu.
Fr. Maina’s lifeless body was discovered on May 15, 2025, along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway near the Diotomite stage by a motorcycle rider who was passing by.
The priest, who appeared weak and disoriented, informed the Good Samaritan that he had been abducted in Nyahururu. He was rushed to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, where he succumbed to his injuries minutes after being admitted.
Medical staff noted visible bruises on the left side of his head, which were bleeding at the time of his arrival. Following his death, the body was transferred to the Nyahururu Sub-County morgue for preservation and further examination.
An autopsy conducted on May 19 by government pathologist Dr. Ngulungu revealed that the head bruises may not have been the cause of death. As a result, toxicological samples were collected for advanced analysis to determine the actual cause.
Authorities suspect foul play, citing claims that Fr. Maina was being trailed by unknown individuals.
These individuals are believed to have been demanding a share of money allegedly given to him after he presided over a high-profile Silver Jubilee Anniversary and ordination ceremony on April 27, attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several politicians.
Further complicating the case are unverified reports suggesting that Fr. Maina had confided in others that his life was in danger. However, he had not filed any formal report with the police.
Investigators have since recorded several statements and are pursuing forensic leads to reconstruct the priest’s final movements.
DCI has appealed to the public to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation by contacting the nearest police station or using the toll-free lines 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).
In a statement, the DCI urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading speculation online. “Our investigators are committed to uncovering the truth and bringing those responsible to justice,” the statement read.
The Catholic community and residents of Nyahururu continue to mourn the loss of a respected cleric whose untimely death has shocked the nation.
