Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has defended striker Rasmus Højlund amid the team’s ongoing goal-scoring challenges, emphasizing that the issue is collective rather than individual.
Following United’s recent 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking their 15th league loss of the season, Højlund’s goal drought has come under scrutiny.
The Danish forward has netted just once in 28 appearances across all competitions this season.
Despite the criticism, Amorim stressed that the team’s offensive struggles are a shared responsibility.
“The only way I know is to work, show the videos,” Amorim stated, highlighting the importance of continued training and analysis. “He needs to score a goal, and he will not score if he’s out. So I try to manage that during games. He needs to score one. That’s all a striker needs.”
Amorim acknowledged that Højlund’s lack of goals is a concern but reiterated that the problem extends beyond a single player.
“We don’t serve our strikers as we should,” he noted, pointing out the team’s overall difficulty in creating scoring opportunities.
The manager’s comments come as United faces one of its most challenging seasons in recent history. With the team languishing in 14th place, their offensive woes have been a significant factor in their struggles. Amorim’s approach focuses on collective improvement, aiming to rebuild confidence and cohesion within the squad.
As United prepares for upcoming fixtures, including a crucial Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao, Amorim’s emphasis on teamwork and resilience will be vital.
The manager remains committed to supporting his players, including Højlund, as they work to overcome the current challenges and strive for a stronger finish to the season.
