Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger could miss the highly anticipated Champions League clash against Arsenal due to fears that UEFA may suspend him, Marca reports.
The concern arises following complaints from Atlético Madrid regarding the celebrations of Rüdiger, Dani Ceballos, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Jr. after their recent victory at the Metropolitano.
The controversy stems from Real Madrid’s fiery encounter with Atlético, in which Los Blancos emerged victorious.
After the final whistle, some Madrid players, including Rüdiger, were seen celebrating in a manner that Atlético deemed excessive and provocative.
The club has since lodged an official complaint with UEFA, urging action against the players involved.
Among those under scrutiny, Rüdiger appears to be at the greatest risk. Real Madrid fear that UEFA may respond to Atlético’s complaint by handing the German defender a suspension, which would see him miss the crucial first-leg clash against Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Losing Rüdiger would be a major blow to Carlo Ancelotti’s side, as the center-back has been a key pillar in Madrid’s defense this season.
Dani Ceballos, Kylian Mbappé, and Vinícius Jr. are also part of the controversy, but it remains unclear whether they face any disciplinary action.
The celebrations in question reportedly took place in front of Atlético supporters, further intensifying tensions between the two Madrid rivals.
Real Madrid are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to appeal any potential suspension. The club believes that their players were merely celebrating an important victory and that the complaint from Atlético is an overreaction.
However, UEFA’s disciplinary committee has the authority to review the case and impose sanctions if they deem the celebrations to be unsportsmanlike conduct.
With the Arsenal match approaching, Madrid fans will be anxiously waiting for UEFA’s decision. Rüdiger’s potential absence would significantly weaken the team’s backline, forcing Ancelotti to make tactical adjustments against one of the strongest attacking teams in Europe.
As tensions rise between Madrid and Atlético, all eyes are now on UEFA to determine whether Rüdiger and his teammates will face any consequences for their post-match celebrations.
