President William Ruto launched the Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project in Misikhu, Bungoma County.
The initiative is set to connect more than 28,000 households in the county to reliable power, fostering socio-economic growth and improving livelihoods.
Speaking during the launch, President Ruto highlighted the critical role of electricity in driving industrialization and economic development.
“Reliable and affordable power is the engine of our industrial growth. Through the Last Mile Connectivity Programme, we are ensuring that households and businesses across Kenya have access to this essential resource,” he said.
The Last Mile Electricity Connectivity Project, a flagship initiative under the government’s broader energy strategy, aims to extend the national electricity grid to rural and underserved areas.
By providing affordable electricity connections, the program seeks to bridge the energy gap, enabling households to access modern energy services and spurring local businesses to grow.
The project’s implementation in Bungoma County marks a significant step forward in the government’s commitment to enhancing energy access in the region.
The connection of 28,000 households is expected to not only improve the quality of life for residents but also unlock new economic opportunities, especially for small businesses and cottage industries.
“Electricity is not just about lighting homes—it’s about empowering communities, creating jobs, and supporting enterprises to thrive. By connecting more Kenyans to the grid, we are laying the foundation for economic transformation from the grassroots,” Ruto added.
Residents of Misikhu expressed their excitement and gratitude for the program, noting its potential to transform the local economy.
“With electricity, we can start small businesses, improve education for our children, and even access better healthcare services,” said Mary Wanjala, a local resident.
The Last Mile Connectivity Programme is part of Kenya’s broader vision to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, in line with the country’s development goals and the global push for sustainable energy for all.
As the rollout continues, the program is expected to catalyze industrial growth, particularly in rural areas, by providing the necessary infrastructure for businesses to thrive.
With the launch in Bungoma County, the government reiterates its commitment to ensuring no region is left behind in the quest for equitable development.
This initiative further aligns with President Ruto’s pledge to prioritize economic empowerment at the grassroots level, making electricity a driver of progress and prosperity for all Kenyans.
