Moi university student leaders have come out appealing to the government and
Higher Education Loans Board fraternity to disburse funds to students, following
the delays witnessed.
While speaking to the press, the president of Moi University, Erick Opas, has
requested the Ministry of Education to fasten the process of HELB disbursement to
enable the students to sit for their end of semester examinations.
“We are requesting the ministry of education to release funds in order for students
to be able to pay for their school fees, rent and other needs,” said Opas.
Manasseh Kasina, a student representative, has requested the government and
especially president Ruto whose agenda includes supporting the youth, to look into
the issue and support youths at the university through HELB disbursement.
“HELB is supposed to be disbursed in between the semester but we are coming to
the end and no money has been disbursed. We are requesting president Ruto who
happens to be advocating for youth welfare to support us through the disbursement
of HELB,” Kasina said.
Wangechi Kamau, also a student representative, claims the delays in disbursement
could lead to university students using alternative means of survival like robbing
people.
“The government has been responding to issues such as insecurity in the country,
unaware that those could be the university students who are unable to provide for
themselves and therefore use illegal means of survival,” said Wangechi
