Michael ‘Mickey’ Mwenda emerged as the victor
Red Bull Dance Your Style, the premier urban street dance competition worldwide, embarked on a nationwide tour, making a vibrant stop at Eldoret’s Rupa’s Mall this past weekend (13 April).
The Eldoret leg of the tour brought together the city’s vibrant dance community and enthusiasts for an unparalleled showcase of dance artistry, networking opportunities, and exhilarating battle sessions. Michael ‘Mickey’ Mwenda emerged as the victor, with Elvis ‘Ecqo’ Clinton Otieno securing the first runner-up position.
Reflecting on his triumph, Michael Mwenda expressed his elation, stating, “I’m ecstatic to win the crowd’s votes! This victory marks a significant milestone for me. It’s truly beyond what I could have imagined. The level of art here is astounding and it has been a thrill seeing and being part of all the action. Red Bull Dance Your Style has provided the Eldoret dance community with a platform to connect and display our talents.”
Battle-session
The journey of Red Bull Dance Your Style continues with its next destination set for United Mall Kisumu on 27 April, traversing various Kenyan cities and featuring qualifiers at two universities, KU and USIU. The top two winners from each qualifier will converge in Nairobi on 13 July for the national finals, where Kenya’s premier dancer and representative for the world finals in Mumbai, India, will be determined.
Red Bull Dance Your Style stands out with its unique format – devoid of judges, as the crowd determines the winner through voting for their favorite dancers. The competition tests dancers’ creativity, freestyle prowess, and musicality in front of a live audience. Spectators play an integral role, wielding blue or red placards after each battle to indicate their chosen victor. All urban dance styles are embraced, with the exception of break dancing – the sole rule that remains unbroken.
Red Bull Dance Your Style transcends borders, with 51 countries participating globally. Kenya’s ultimate champion will seize an all-expenses-paid journey to India for the World Finals slated for this November.
Enthusiasts and dance aficionados alike are urged to seize the opportunity to showcase their talent or support their favorite dancer at the upcoming events.
The competitions will be heading to the following towns:
Eldoret Media Hub, a working space for journalists based in Uasin Gishu County set up by the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association (UGJA) through a Media Council of Kenya (MCK) grant.
The facility was officially opened in August 2021 by the MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo.
