A 27-year-old woman has died following a suspected acid attack in Kiritiri Town, in an incident that has shocked residents and raised concerns over rising violent attacks in the area.
The victim, identified as Jackline Wanjiru, succumbed to severe burn injuries while receiving treatment at Embu Level Five Hospital after the early morning assault on Friday.
According to reports, Wanjiru, who was a mother of one, was heading to the miraa market at around 5:30 a.m. when she boarded a boda boda operated by John Juma.
Witnesses said the motorcycle was intercepted by another bike carrying two masked men who allegedly poured a corrosive substance suspected to be acid on the pair before escaping from the scene.
Residents claimed the attackers struck without any confrontation, leading to speculation that the attack may have been carefully planned and targeted.
An eyewitness, Emmah Wawira, described the scene as horrifying after locals responded to screams from the victims.
“I found Jackie badly injured, with her clothes and body severely burnt by the acid from the neck down to her feet,” she said.
Good Samaritans rushed the victims to hospital for emergency treatment. Despite suffering burns on his head and hands, the boda boda rider reportedly managed to ride himself to seek medical help.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Wanjiru was later transferred to Embu Level Five Hospital, where she later died while undergoing treatment.
The boda boda rider is still receiving treatment and is reported to be in stable condition.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident as residents demand swift justice for the victim and increased security measures to curb violent attacks in the area.
“This was a cruel and inhumane act. We want those responsible arrested and prosecuted,” one resident said.
