Moses Wetang’ula, the Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, has appealed to political leaders across the country to practice tolerance and restraint as the nation approaches the 2027 General Elections.
During the fundraising event at Kanyadhiang SDA Church in Karachuonyo Constituency, Wetang’ula told political leaders from all parties to run their campaigns according to respectful and mature standards. He warned against using language which might create ethnic and religious and political divisions among people.
The Wetang’ula election period statement demonstrates how unrestrained speech leads to national unrest which jeopardizes social stability. He warned that negative remarks which divide people would create ethnic and nepotistic and religious animosity that would lead to social unrest.
The Speaker condemned politicians who create ethnic divisions to gain political backing by telling voters to reject leaders who use such strategies. He said that political competition must not divide Kenyans because all citizens should remain united throughout the electoral process.
He further called for issue-driven campaigns, stating that leaders should focus on presenting policies development plans and ideological ideas instead of engaging in personal attacks against their rivals. Wetang’ula stressed that political rivalry should end after elections, allowing the country to move forward in unity.
To show the value of maintaining political connections throughout political parties Wetang’ula shared his past experiences with the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He explained that despite their affiliation with separate coalitions during the 2022 elections they established a friendly relationship which included watching Arsenal F.C. games together.
The Nyanza region residents should back President William Samoei Ruto according to Wetang’ula who believes that collaboration with the national government will bring rapid progress to the area.
The remarks received backing from Homa Bay Town Constituency Member of Parliament Peter Kaluma and Karachuonyo Constituency MP Adipo Okuome.
Kaluma said that the Nyanza region has begun multiple development projects which the current administration is implementing. He said that these government programs show the commitment of the government to improve the area, and he asked the residents to work with national leaders to bring in more development projects and opportunities.
Okuome stated that the region must show its support through government backing because President Biden shows goodwill toward the Nyanza people.
The leaders asked residents to maintain peace and unity and development as the nation approaches the upcoming general election. They said that political competition must never harm the national unity of the country.
