Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru on Wednesday set off a chain of groundbreaking developments, handing over sites and launching three large projects in a day. The packed schedule underscored her hands-on style of leadership and reiterated her commitment to fast-tracking the county’s socio-economic growth.

The Governor presided over the groundbreaking of Kiumbu and Wamumu markets in Mwea and the Sagana Affordable Housing Project in India. Together, the projects have the potential to benefit thousands of small traders, families, and job seekers and align with Kirinyaga’s long-term goal of fostering industrial growth and sustainable livelihoods.

When ready, Kiumbu and Wamumu markets will accommodate approximately 700 traders, instead of the disorganized and dirty open-air spaces that have for years characterized local trade. The modern facilities will include orderly stalls, permanent water and electricity supply, waste management systems, ICT centers with free Wi-Fi, food courts, and child-care facilities for mothers.

“We are launching these markets as I promised when I was in campaigns. Land for the same has already been set aside, and today we are fulfilling that promise,” Waiguru said. She added that the county has so far finished 18 markets, and another 11 were built in partnership with the national government.

The two new markets will link directly to the Sagana-based County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) that is in its final stages of completion. The facility will be used by traders and farmers for value addition and processing, which will open up wider markets and improve returns.

The developments were welcomed as a breakthrough by local leaders and residents. Tebere MCA Peter Karinga said the projects will revolutionize the area, while resident Martha Wangui thanked the Governor for her broader achievements, particularly in healthcare services.

At the same time, the Sagana Affordable Housing Project will provide 487 new modern houses in the initial phase of the National Housing Programme. The project will generate a minimum of 300 direct jobs and create business opportunities for local artisans, suppliers, and transporters. Waiguru connected the housing project to the Masterplan of Sagana Agro-Industrial City, which also conceptuales an Export Processing Zone and Special Economic Zone.

Kariti MCA Jeremiah Makimi commended Waiguru for having regained 252 acres of land that was grabbed and allocated it to the Industrial Park, stating it was a great boost for investor confidence. Majority Leader Benson Ngahu also recognized her leadership, stating her development agenda is leaving a lasting legacy.

Governor Waiguru reconfirmed her commitment towards keeping her election pledges, stating that she was determined to create a county in which all residents can prosper and enjoy meaningful opportunities.
