I pledge to serve diligently and ensure the people of Ekerenyo access the development and services they rightfully deserve,” Ongaro said shortly after his declaration.

The opposition coalition affiliated with Jubilee Party presidential aspirant Dr. Fred Matiang’i has won a clean sweep in the Nyamira County by-elections, clinching all three County Assembly seats that were up for contention.

In Nyamaiya Ward, Chris Osiemo of UPA took the seat with a commanding 4,790 votes. He was followed by UDA’s Thomas Nyandieka, who managed 1,357 votes. The margin underlined Osiemo’s strong grassroots support and marked one of the opposition’s most decisive victories in the county.

Still, Ekerenyo Ward also handed UPA a win, after Jeremiah Ongaro Njenga was elected with 3,507 votes, while his closest challenger Francis Amenya of UDA managed 2,292. The win adds to the influence that UPA is gaining in Nyamira and bolsters Dr. Matiang’i’s political momentum ahead of the 2027 race.

In Nyansiongo Ward, the seat was won by Jackson Mogusu of the PDP party with 2,759 votes, edging out UPA’s Kevin Maranga, who garnered 2,686 votes. Mogusu won after the seat was forced into a repeat election by a court order following his earlier petition against the results declared initially.

Despite incidents of tension and complaints from some aspirants about voter intimidation, by-elections were conducted and concluded smoothly by the IEBC. Various officials at different polling stations ensured that order was restored expeditiously whenever disruptions occurred.

Ekerenyo Ward MCA-elect Jeremiah Ongaro expressed his deep-seated gratitude to the people for entrusting him with leadership after he was issued an election certificate. He applauded their commitment to fulfilling their promise of supporting his bid.

“I am grateful for the confidence you placed in me and for standing by your word. I pledge to serve diligently and ensure the people of Ekerenyo access the development and services they rightfully deserve,” Ongaro said shortly after his declaration.

The Nyamaiya Ward seat fell vacant after the former MCA died in a tragic road accident. In Ekerenyo, the seat became vacant when the sitting MCA took over as Speaker of the County Assembly, following a position that had been left vacant when former Speaker Henry Okero was impeached. Nyansiongo Ward returned to the ballot after a court ordered a fresh election to settle disputes raised in an earlier petition.

These sweeping victories have galvanized the political base of Dr. Matiang’i and signalled renewed confidence in opposition-leaning candidates in Nyamira County. —
