The Uasin Gishu county government has heightened the fight against illicit brew with thousands of liters of illicit Chang’aa and kangara brew netted and destroyed in the last one month.

According to Koiya Arap Maiyo, Director Alcoholic Drinks Board Uasin Gishu County, 9,500 litres of ‘kangara’ have been confiscated and 1,550 litres of ‘changaa’ impounded by the board with the help of the county enforcement officers.

In the process, 39 individuals linked to the illegal brewing business were arrested and arraigned in court.

“The courts have fined them Over KSH 1.7 million and most of them have been imprisoned between one to six  months,” said the director.

Close to 800 liquor licenses have been issued by the county government so far which accounts to  80% of legally operating liquor businesses.

“Therefore we have 20% of business people who have not received licenses, we will ensure 100% compliance,”Maiyo noted.

The director has warned no liquor business will be allowed to operate less than 300 meters from education institutions while those operating within estates.
