With the launch of the 2025 Uasin Gishu County Statistical Abstract, a comprehensive document intended to guide planning, budgeting, and development under the county’s Nguzo Kumi Agenda, Uasin Gishu County has made a significant stride toward evidence-based governance. The report, launched on Tuesday, is historic because Uasin Gishu became the first county in Kenya to publish such an extensive annual statistical compilation.

Speaking during the launch, county leadership reiterated that reliable data remains central to transformational governance and that such access to correct information will help policymakers allocate resources more effectively and elicit responses to changing needs of residents.

The report released today by KNBS shows that over the years, the economic performance of Uasin Gishu has continued to strengthen. The Gross County Product for the county increased significantly, growing from KSh 223.8 billion to KSh 349.2 billion, an indication of a high and expanding local economy. According to chiefs, this trend is not only a sign of economic resilience but also an indication of improved productivity across key sectors such as agriculture, trade, and industry.

The county’s population currently stands at 1.28 million, a figure that plays a critical role in shaping development priorities. Accompanying the growth in population is an increasing demand for roads, water, housing, schools, and other essential public services. County leaders said the data will help ensure that investments in infrastructure keep pace with the demographic trends to realize long-term and sustainable growth.

The report indicates admirable progress in the health sector. The number of health facilities has increased from 129 to 146, increasing access to care in both rural and urban areas. Deliveries conducted at Mama Rachel Ruto Maternity Hospital, one of the county’s flagship health institutions, stand at over 4,400, a testament to the critical role played by the facility in supporting maternal and child health.

Agriculture and enterprise development, which have long been considered the backbone of the region’s economy, also recorded the best indicators. The county recorded a 53 percent increase in the number of licensed businesses, a statistic that has ranked Uasin Gishu as Kenya’s most business-friendly county. Officials attributed this rise to streamlined licensing processes, improved support for small and medium enterprises, and an enabling environment that promotes investment.

County authorities said the Statistical Abstract would be a transformative tool for making future decisions and would ensure that development initiatives remained inclusive and responsive to community needs. They noted that the document symbolizes the beginning of a new era where planning would be based on solid evidence rather than assumptions. As Uasin Gishu charts the next course, leaders renewed their pledges to use data in advancing service delivery, ensuring transparency, and achieving equitable development for all across the county.
