Managing salon staff in Kenya requires good communication skills, effective leadership, and an understanding of local markets. The salon business is booming in Kenya. Women have a massive influence in the Kenyan consumer market; they have the power to influence the purchase of products and services, which makes the beauty industry flourish.

Many salons have yet to be successful, ‘the biggest challenge in this industry is finding and keeping the right employee,’ says Paul, a manager in one of the busiest salons in Nairobi CBD. He shared some crucial tips about salon employees.

Here are some tips to help you manage your salon staff effectively:

Hire the right people: Before you can manage your staff, you need to make sure that you hire the right people for the job. Look for candidates with experience in the beauty industry who share your salon’s values and vision. Consider those with an attitude to learn and unlearn, as they will be open to changes.

Set clear expectations: It’s essential to set clear expectations for your staff. This includes job responsibilities, performance standards, and policies and procedures. Create a system, especially for salary payments. Some nail technicians and hairdressers want to earn daily commissions, others weekly and monthly. It is critical to choose a strategy and stick to it. The most recommended is paying salaries at the end of the month. It increases employee commitment and weans out those who are unfocused.

Provide training and support: Make sure your staff receives the necessary training and support to do their job effectively. This can include on-the-job training, workshops, and seminars. It’ll benefit your salon employees if they can get training on new nail technologies and trending hairstyles. Pay for team-building activities. It’ll make your staff feel valued.

Communicate regularly: Effective communication is critical to managing your staff. Schedule regular staff meetings to discuss performance, address concerns, and keep everyone up to date on the salon’s goals and objectives. Everyone who knows your salon goals feels valued and important enough to contribute to your vision.

Recognize and reward good performance: Recognize and reward good performance for motivating your staff and creating a positive work environment. This can include bonuses, incentives, and promotions.

If someone has been with the salon for years and is the best nail technician, make them a supervisor for the beauty section. Let them be involved in recruiting and training new beauticians.

Address performance issues promptly: If you notice them, address them promptly. This can help prevent the problem from escalating and negatively impacting the rest of the staff.

Overall, effective management requires a combination of leadership, communication, and support. By setting clear expectations, providing training and support, recognizing good performance, and addressing issues promptly, you can create a positive and productive work environment for your salon staff.
