The National transport and Safety Authority NTSA in collaboration with the TukTuk operators Association of Kenya has launched a nation-wide drive aimed at listing all Tuk tuk operators and their owners.
The chairperson of the National Tuktuk operators association Vincent Were has announced their support to the nationwide rollout of the initiative in line with the latest directive issued by the NTSA
Under the initiative the operators would be required to register officially as members of a recognized Tuk tuk Sacco or co-operative movements within their respective towns or areas of operation
‘This is a good move, and at least it would help us, and our members be recognized by government and other partner institutions in the country’ said the chairperson whilst addressing the members of the Association in Kisumu on Tuesday
A’s a sector we have been operating without any known structures for so long, and we have just been estimating the membership, this registration shall be a big boost, to our sectors and those who mean well to us’, he added
Mr. Were has however called on the NTSA to put in place systems that would support the operators by ensuring a simplified listing procedure and additional time to those operators and tuk tuk owners with difficulty in meeting the set term and conditions for the registration
Michael Mboya, the coordinator of the tuktuk operators from the 6 counties in the former Nyanza province, also lauded the initiative, adding that it would at least help get rid of bad elements within the sectors
Michael said that the sector for instance around Kisumu city and neighboring towns has experienced an increase in the number of school going underage youth and unregistered drivers who join in the sector , hence he believes that the an official initiative launched by the NTSA
