Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode has outrightly disowned reports of Governor James Orengo’s resignation.
Okode confirmed Monday night in Kisumu that a letter making the rounds online claiming to indicate the governor‘s resignation is a fabrication. He described it as the work of political saboteurs aiming to trick residents.
“The letter is not true. Governor Orengo has not resigned,” Okode confirmed.
He explained that Orengo is out of the country on personal matters. The governor will be back soon.
The Speaker assured residents that county operations are business as usual.
“There is no cause for alarm. The governor is still in charge. County business continues as usual,” he added.
The explanation comes as alarm spreads among Siaya citizens and civil society groups. Siaya Bunge la Wananchi members have penned both the County Assembly and the Executive, demanding answers regarding the vanishing act of Governor Orengo and Deputy Governor William Oduol.
Others have criticized Speaker Okode for crossing into executive territory. They claim he is taking on executive roles, overstepping the Assembly’s constitutional mandate of oversight.
“People sense the Speaker is overreaching his authority,” added a civil rights activist during an open forum.
Aside from issues of governance, citizens are also protesting the recently approved county budget. The budget, they say, was adopted without sufficient public input.
The critics argued that the financial figures were not revealed to the public, raising fear of mismanagement.
Okode, on the other hand, maintained that the Assembly is proceeding within the law. He said all the procedures were being followed to ensure transparency and accountability in county leadership.
“The Assembly is still getting the job done. We honor checks and balances, and we are committed to transparency in the handling of public funds,” he added.
Despite the drama, Okode maintained political saboteurs are creating unwarranted tension in Siaya.
“Fake letters and propaganda will not destabilize the county. Leadership remains intact, and people services continue,” he said.
The Governor Orengo is to respond to the matter when back in the country.
