A section of Uasin Gishu county leaders led by Governor Jonathan Bii and former governor Senator Jackson Mandago , Uasin Gishu deputy governor and a host of members of parliament, Saturday fired in anger against a section of parents who are accused of sabotaging the Finland and Canada Scholarship program.
Addressing the media at the Eldoret Sports Club the leaders claim Ksh 96M was spent from the consolidated Uasin Gishu County oversees account to offset a fee balance for over 100 students who were facing deportation from Canada and Finland a move that would have shuttered down the entire scholarship program.
“The committee managing the overseas account made that decision in order to save the program,parents who benefited from that move committed to repaying back ,however they haven’t done so , forcing many of the students who had cleared their fees and were waiting to travel for their overseas studies ,to continue delaying for lack of money in the overseas account” Said Senator Mandago
It is very unfortunate to see parents who committed to repay back the advances they received, readying themselves to grace the graduation ceremonies of their children abroad, while some parents are languishing in pain having paid the fees and their children are yet to travel , let them do the honorable thing and pay back as soon as possible. Added Mandago.
Hon. Gilbert Cepkong’a the Chair of the Uasin Gishu County assembly ad hoc Committee has assured the affected parents that not a single penny will be lost and that names of the parents who received school fee advances of over Ksh 96 M would be made public.
“We will come for you ,it does not matter the positions you hold in society ,we cannot have a section of our parents who sold their assets continue demonstrating while your children have had their fees paid through the sweat of other parents ,we must hold you to account”Warned Hon Chepkong’a
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii and his deputy have expressed their commitment to an amicable solution that will see parents refunded their monies and the program re-engineered to address the existing gaps.
Some of the affected parents have received their refund including Josephine Tireito mother to the Deputy speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Shollei who was refunded over Ksh 640,000.
