In the early hours of Tuesday, a devastating road accident near Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway left several people seriously injured. The collision involved a 14-seater matatu operated by We Travelers Sacco and a lorry transporting an excavator, both heading towards Eldoret.
Eyewitnesses reported that the lorry lacked functional rear lights and reflectors, rendering it nearly invisible to the matatu driver in the pre-dawn darkness. “The lorry had no lights or reflectors; the matatu driver couldn’t see it until it was too late,” recounted a witness at the scene.
All 14 passengers aboard the matatu sustained injuries, with those seated at the front suffering the most severe. Victims were promptly transported to various hospitals in Nakuru for medical attention.
This incident adds to the alarming statistics of road accidents in Kenya. According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), over 1,000 lives have been lost in road accidents since the beginning of 2025. NTSA Director General George Njau attributed the high number of fatalities to factors such as speeding, lane indiscipline, and the use of unroadworthy vehicles .
