Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, accusing him of gross incompetence and orchestrating efforts to undermine President William Ruto’s administration.
Speaking in the Senate on June 10, 2025, Cherargei pointed to the unexplained death of Albert Ojwang’ in a police cell as evidence of systemic failures within the Interior Ministry.
Cherargei expressed alarm over escalating criminal activities nationwide, citing recent incidents in Ongata Barikoi and other areas as proof of the ministry’s inability to ensure law and order.
He accused Murkomen of failing to address the deteriorating security situation, claiming the CS’s leadership has led to loss of lives and public distrust.
“There are plans to sabotage President Ruto’s government, and they are led by the Interior Ministry. Murkomen must resign and take political responsibility,” Cherargei declared.
The senator, who described himself as a “professional guest” of police stations, having spent nights in several Nairobi facilities, expressed shock at Ojwang’s death in custody. He contrasted the current situation with the era of President Moi’s regime, noting that even during periods of detention without trial, police cells were not “death traps.”
Cherargei demanded accountability for the rising number of custodial deaths under unclear circumstances.
The feud between Cherargei and Murkomen is not new. Tensions began in 2023 when Cherargei, then critical of Murkomen’s tenure as Transport CS, accused him of mismanaging infrastructure projects like Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and sidelining local contractors.
At a funeral in Nandi County, Murkomen retaliated, accusing Cherargei of tribalism, further escalating their public spat. As Interior CS, Murkomen continues to face Cherargei’s criticism over issues like banditry in Kerio Valley and terrorist attacks.
Cherargei argued that Murkomen’s alleged incompetence, previously evident in the Roads Ministry, has now manifested in the Interior docket, with dire consequences for national security. He urged the government to appoint a more capable leader to restore public confidence in the ministry.
The senator’s remarks have sparked debate in the Senate, with some colleagues echoing his concerns about the state of security. As pressure mounts on Murkomen, the public awaits the government’s response to these serious allegations.
