Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has confirmed more than 3,500 Green Army environmental staff to the permanent and pensionable posts.

Addressing a handover function at Central Park, Sakaja termed the action a milestone for the cleanliness and environmental management of Nairobi.

“Last we had recruitment in the environment department was in 1987. This is the largest recruitment in history. You have now finally got permanent and pensionable jobs after years of cleaning up our city,” Sakaja said.

He encouraged the workers to stay focused and committed to their work.

The city needs to be cleaned every day. That is what you do now. Work in rotation, sweep all the suburbs, and utilize all the equipment we have availed to you in full — from machines to tippers and compactors,” he added.

Sakaja also revealed plans to establish the Green Nairobi Company, a separate agency that will be tasked with city cleanliness just as Nairobi Water will deal with water services.

“The firm has also been registered. We are financing it, and we have studied successful models in South Africa, Kigali, and other cities. It will shortly take over cleaning activities in the city,” he said.

Green Nairobi CEC Maureen Njeri appreciated the Green Army’s dedication in the past two years.

This guarantee is a testimony that the Governor trusts your work. Now let us work even harder. You are the guardians of Nairobi’s cleanliness and beauty,” she continued.

Finance CEC Charles Kerich called on the staff to await their finances diligently and be proud to work in a clean city.

“Wear the crown of a clean city with pride. Utilize this advantage well,” he advised.

Environment Chief Officer Geoffrey Mosiria called on the newly confirmed staff to set a benchmark for others.

“You now have the mandate to lead by example. Work even harder and guide residents on how to keep their surroundings clean,” he said.

The confirmation of the Green Army is expected to boost morale among the city’s environmental workforce and strengthen Nairobi’s efforts to maintain high cleanliness standards.
