President William Ruto held a consultative meeting with leaders from Meru County at State House, Nairobi, bringing together elected representatives to discuss party strengthening and ongoing development programmes in the region. The Meru delegation was led by Governor Isaac Mutuma and included Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The meeting drew participation from 11 Members of Parliament and 67 Members of the County Assembly out of the county’s 69 MCAs, reflecting broad representation from the county’s leadership. The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) grassroots development plans at the local level will use participatory and democratic processes as their main method of operation.

The President stated that the party will conduct internal elections which will begin at polling centers to achieve greater inclusivity and accountability in its organizational structure. The approach is aimed at giving ordinary members a stronger voice in shaping the party’s leadership and direction at the local level.

The leaders assessed the government’s development agenda which focuses on various aspects of Meru County beyond their party activities. The discussions focused on methods to speed up essential programs and initiatives which aim to create economic growth and improve residents’ living standards.

The ongoing KSh1 billion upgrade of Meru County Hospital will transform the facility into a national referral center. The national government is also supporting electricity connectivity for about 30,000 households in the county, a move expected to boost both household welfare and local businesses.

The discussions emphasized infrastructure development together with trade growth as their most important topics. The government is managing the construction of 17 modern markets which will create better trading spaces for small-scale traders while developing affordable housing projects to provide more people with access to decent housing.

Road development is another pillar of the county’s transformation plan. The leaders mentioned that multiple essential roads are currently being developed to enhance transportation options while creating new economic prospects.

The new Nithi Bridge construction project and the 17-kilometre Meru Town Bypass construction project will begin in the near future. The combined project, estimated to cost KSh3 billion, is expected to ease traffic flow and strengthen regional connectivity once works commence.

The government aims to create better political organization through the consultative engagement because the national and county leaders want to accelerate projects which will benefit local residents.
