President William Ruto has extended a heartfelt gesture to the family of the late Albert Ojwang’, donating Sh2 million to support them in their time of grief.

The donation was announced by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga during a visit to the family’s rural home on June 16, 2025, where she also conveyed the President’s condolences.Albert Ojwang’, the only child of Meshack Ojwang’, tragically died while in police custody in Nairobi.

Governor Wanga, who led other local leaders in expressing sympathy, shared President Ruto’s message to the family. “The President called and condoled with you and your wife, and shared how deeply pained he is as a father. Today, he has sent us with Sh2 million,” she told Meshack Ojwang’.

In addition to the financial aid, Governor Wanga pledged to donate a three-bedroom house to ensure the elder Ojwang’ has a decent place to live.

“Mourners will come, sit in a tent, eat and leave — but you deserve a better place to live,” she said, highlighting the need to provide the family with lasting comfort beyond the immediate tragedy.

Adding to the condolences, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga also reached out to the family via phone from abroad, expressing his sorrow over Albert’s mysterious death in custody.

Governor Wanga urged swift and thorough prosecution of those responsible for the death, emphasizing that justice must be served without favoritism or delay.

“There should be no sacred cows in this case. We want those responsible for Albert’s murder brought to justice. This tragedy has left a deep sadness in this home,” she said.

The loss of Albert Ojwang’ has deeply shaken the community, especially as he was the only child of his family. Governor Wanga called on the authorities to do more to ease the family’s pain and prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Meshack Ojwang’ expressed immense gratitude to both President Ruto and Raila Odinga for their support during this difficult time. “I thank the President for taking up my son’s case as his own and standing with our family,” he said.

“He called me and offered his condolences. Even Raila Odinga called from abroad to console me. The governor has also supported me throughout this painful journey.”
