Preacher Gilbert Deya Dies in Kisumu-Bondo Highway Crash

Controversial preacher Bishop Gilbert Deya died in a fatal road accident on Tuesday evening at Namba Kapiyo area along the Kisumu-Bondo highway.

The crash, which occurred around 6:00 p.m., involved three vehicles and left more than 50 people injured, including several Moi University students traveling on a school bus.

According to police reports, the accident involved a Toyota Voxy (registration number KDE 595F) driven by Bishop Deya, a Moi University bus, and a Toyota Fortuner.

Authorities confirmed that the Voxy, traveling from Kisumu to Bondo, veered off its lane and collided head-on with the university bus before hitting the Fortuner that was trailing the bus.

Bishop Deya, aged 65, suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in his vehicle — Christine Akinyi Odhiambo (42) and Nancy Were (37) — sustained minor injuries and were taken to Kombewa Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Emergency response teams from Kombewa Hospital and St. John Ambulance arrived promptly to assist with rescue efforts. At least 16 Moi University students — 14 female and 2 male — were seriously injured and transported to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized care. Several students suffered deep cuts, head injuries, and chest trauma.

The Kisumu County Department of Health also confirmed that 41 additional victims were treated and discharged from Kombewa Hospital in stable condition.

Bishop Deya’s body was taken to the Kombewa Sub-County Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

All three vehicles sustained significant damage and were towed to the police yard for inspection. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident.
