Police Recover 48 AK-47 Rounds Hidden Inside Meat on Passenger Bus

Police have recovered 48 rounds of AK-47 ammunition concealed inside pieces of meat after intercepting a passenger bus in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County.
The ammunition was recovered during a security operation conducted by a multi-agency team along the Thika-Garissa Highway.
Officers stopped a Zafanana Coach operated by Northern Cruz Sacco as it travelled from Dadaab to Nairobi.
During a search of the bus, officers found a blue woven carrier bag placed on the overhead luggage rack serving seats 23, 24 and 25.
Inside the bag was a consignment of meat. A closer inspection, however, revealed a black nylon package containing 48 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, a calibre commonly associated with AK-47 rifles.
Police arrested the driver, Samuel Ngui Munyithya, and turnboy Justus Muatha Kiola after they were unable to account for the consignment or identify its owner.
The two suspects were taken to Kanyonyoo Police Station, where they remained in custody as detectives continued investigations into the origin and intended destination of the ammunition.
The passenger bus was also detained, while the recovered ammunition was secured as an exhibit.
Investigators are expected to establish who packed the ammunition, where it was obtained and who was meant to receive it.
