Police Constable Arrested Over Lawyer Kyalo Mbobu Murder

A police constable has been arrested in connection with the murder of Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, more than a year after the former chairman of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal was shot dead.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said Thursday, September 24, 2026, that detectives had arrested Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, whom they suspect was the gunman in the September 9, 2025 killing.
Mbobu was shot while driving home from work along Magadi Road in Nairobi. The DCI described the incident as a targeted attack and said specialised homicide and forensic teams had worked on the case for more than a year.
A major development in the investigation came after detectives recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the shooting.
The DCI said ballistic examination established that the firearm was used in the shooting that killed Mbobu. The finding has strengthened the evidence being assembled against the suspect.
Investigators have also identified Inspector Kenneth Sang as a person allegedly involved in coordinating the operation. Sang is currently at large.
According to the DCI, Sang allegedly coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe, who is in custody in connection with the July 2026 murder of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
The link between the two cases has opened a new line of investigation into whether the killings were connected.
Dr Mutiso was shot dead on July 29, 2026, in Nairobi. Five suspects are due to face murder charges in that case, following the Director of Public Prosecutions’ approval of charges against Kimutai Maritim. He is expected to be charged alongside Rose Mbithe, her daughter Angela Mulwa, her son Chris Mulwa and Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi.
The five are expected to appear before the High Court on September 29 for plea-taking.
Mbobu had represented Dr Mutiso’s husband, Prof David Ndetei, in legal proceedings, a detail now being examined by investigators as they pursue the possible connection between the two cases.
The DCI has not disclosed the full alleged motive for Mbobu’s killing. Detectives are continuing to investigate the planning and execution of the attack and are pursuing other people who may have been involved.
Cheruiyot remains in custody pending processing and arraignment in court. The allegations against him and the other named suspects have yet to be tested in court.
