Parliament will prioritize legislative backing and sufficient funding to bolster the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said during a meeting with NCIC leadership Wednesday, July 23, 2025.

Wetang’ula reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to supporting independent commissions, including the recently appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, through enhanced legislation and adequate budgetary allocation to ensure effective service delivery.

“As Parliament, we will support NCIC and any other independent institutions in every way possible in terms of budget allocation, in terms of strengthening the law if there is any need for such a thing to be done to enable you to discharge your responsibilities and play your part in keeping Kenya together and at peace,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker praised NCIC’s role in safeguarding national unity and stressed Parliament’s continued partnership in promoting peaceful coexistence. He also urged the public to support the IEBC ahead of the 2027 general election, calling for an end to premature criticism of the commission.

NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia welcomed Parliament’s ongoing support but urged Wetang’ula to fast-track the 2014 amendment bill to enhance the NCIC Act of 2008.

Wetang’ula expressed concern about escalating protests nationwide, distinguishing between lawful demonstrations and disorderly riots. He called on political leaders to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric, warning such actions could compromise national security and cohesion.

“Any attempt to scare or frighten people or indicate that some people are not required to be where they are is criminal and must be dealt with as such,” he said.

The Speaker emphasized the importance of upholding the spirit of the 2010 Constitution, advocating for orderly demonstrations that respect the rights of all citizens and urging NCIC to remain impartial amid national tensions.
