The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has backed Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as party chairman in accordance with the exit of former Prime Minister and seasoned ODM leader, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a press conference after a Monday, October 27, 2025, Central Committee meeting at ODM headquarters, ODM Secretary General Senator Edwin Sifuna chaired members who eulogized their dead leader as an icon of justice, peace, and democracy whose legacy took over Kenya’s political landscape for decades.
This being the first official statement since the demise of our leader, the Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, we are left with Mama Ida Odinga, their children, and the extended Odinga family,” Sifuna stated. “We extend to them our unbreakable solidarity as we all navigate one of the most difficult periods in our history.”.
The ceremony, described as symbolic and somber, recalled Raila Odinga’s long and unbroken dedication to democracy and national unity. Sifuna expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, the Cabinet, and the Kenyan government for facilitating what he described as “a dignified state funeral befitting a global statesman.”.
The committee noted that Odinga’s death occurred during the 20th anniversary celebrations of ODM, thus making the milestone more significant. “The 20th anniversary will now be both a celebration of party survival as well as a remembrance of the legacy of its founder,” Sifuna stated as he announced that the celebrations would proceed in mid-November in Mombasa.
ODM also resolved to remain the champions of the late leader’s vision for democracy, inclusivity, and justice. The release reaffirmed the party’s unity, observing that no one could replace Raila Odinga, but firm unity would see his mission through. “Raila’s true inheritance is not a position or a name—it is a mission. We must continue the struggle for a Kenya that works for all its children,” Sifuna vowed.
The Central Committee issued a series of resolutions, such as the approval of Dr. Oburu Oginga as caretaker party leader and the continuation of national memorial functions for Raila Odinga. The rites will be held in Magarini (Kilifi County) between November 2–3, and in Homa Bay and Migori counties between November 5–6.
The party also requested the release of billions in political party funds by the national government, asserting that it would be a fitting way of commemorating Raila Odinga’s legacy and sustaining the running of ODM. “Being the best champion of political freedom, Raila fought for party funding to preserve democracy from state intrusion,” stated Sifuna.
In short, the ODM Secretary General reassured Kenyans that the movement would be united and powerful. “Baba founded this party on the pillars of truth, equity, and democracy. We will come out of adversity and keep his dream,” he declared.
The party reaffirmed its dedication to national unity and its coalition with the government on the current ten-point peace and development agenda until 2027.
Rest in peace, Party Leader, People’s President, and Comrade, Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga,” the post concluded.
