In a powerful show of regional unity, eight county governors from the North Rift Economic Bloc (NOREB) today signed historic agreements aimed at transforming the lives of millions and tackling climate change head-on.
At a press event held at the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters in Eldoret, the Governors of Baringo, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Samburu, Trans Nzoia, Turkana, Uasin Gishu, and West Pokot inked Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA).
These strategic partnerships mark a new chapter in the region’s journey toward sustainable development, social cohesion, and economic growth.
Empowering Communities Through Faith-Based Action
The first agreement with the NCCK sets the stage for sweeping community empowerment programs. According to the signed brief, these initiatives will target key areas including dignified livelihoods, education, health, security, climate change, governance, and the inclusion of marginalized groups.
“Our collaboration with NCCK isn’t just about programs – it’s about changing lives,” said NOREB Chairman and Uasin Gishu Governor, Hon. Stephen Sang. “We are determined to work together, hand-in-hand with the community, to design and implement projects that deliver real, lasting impact – especially for youth, women, and persons with disabilities.”
The NCCK will also play a pivotal role in monitoring and evaluation to ensure accountability and long-term resilience for the communities involved.
One Climate, One Fight: Joint Environmental Pact Sealed
Building on their partnership with the NCCK, the governors also signed the Inter-County Climate Change Cooperation Agreement. This deal seeks to harmonize climate laws, policies, and action plans across the eight counties.
It prioritizes the inclusion of indigenous people and marginalized communities in climate governance, while promoting conservation and mitigation efforts. The agreement comes alongside the official launch of the NOREB Climate Change Action Plan – a blueprint developed jointly with the NCCK.
“We’re not just reacting to climate change – we are preparing for it, fighting it, and empowering our people to be part of the solution,” Governor Sang emphasized.
Boosting Agri-Business and Economic Growth with KVDA
The governors further signed an MOU with the Kerio Valley Development Authority to strengthen sustainable socio-economic development. The pact will drive climate-smart agriculture, improve the business environment, and create new income-generating opportunities.
By focusing on sustainability and innovation, the region aims to unlock growth and reduce poverty levels in the North Rift.
A Vision for a Stronger, Greener Future
“This isn’t just another signing ceremony,” said one official during the event. “It’s a rallying cry for partnership, resilience, and prosperity.”
As the sun set on the Uasin Gishu County Headquarters, one thing was clear: the NOREB counties are no longer waiting for change. They’re building it — together.
