Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, is scheduled to appear before the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) today at 11:00 a.m.
The summons follows allegations of ethnic discrimination stemming from social media posts he made on X on May 10, which reportedly incited tensions between the Luo and Luhya communities.
The NCIC’s investigation led to formal hate speech charges filed against Salasya in a Nairobi court on May 19. According to the charge sheet, the MP’s statements violated Section 13(1)(b) and 13(2) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act of 2008, as they were deemed insulting, inflammatory, and intended to provoke ethnic hostility.
The Commission has raised alarms over the escalating political intolerance in Kenya, characterized by a surge in hate speech and divisive rhetoric, particularly on social media and at political rallies.
Two weeks ago, NCIC Chairperson Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia addressed the deteriorating state of political discourse, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to enforcing laws against hate speech to foster unity.
Salasya is one of several politicians under NCIC scrutiny for similar offenses. The Commission continues its efforts to monitor and address hate speech to promote peace and cohesion across Kenya’s diverse communities.
