National Government distributes relief food to over 200,000 people in Kwale County

The National Government has released tons of relief Food to over 200,000 people in Kwale County who are at risk of starving following extreme drought in the area.
Kwale County Commissioner Gideon Oyagi said the area is set to receive 3,200 thousand sacks of rice of 50 kilos each, 1,280 sacks of beans and 800 cartons of canned meat.
” The first phase of food distribution exercise will start at Samburu and Kinango sub counties where people are mostly affected by current drought situation ,Every sub county will receive 400 sacks of rice ,160 sacks of beans and 100 cartons of canned meat ,”Said Mr.Oyagi.
The County Commissioner also asked the committee in charge of the relief distribution to set aside some of the relief food for distribution in schools affected by the drought
“Let us not forget our children in schools especially those in areas affected by drought, special needs schools and orphanages ahead of the national exams, they must continue with their studies and do examinations without any obstacles,”Urged the Commissioner.
Speaking while receiving relief food for Matuga sub-county at Kwale Grain stores, Deputy county commissioner Matuga, Lucy Ndemo said the relief food will benefit families in
Mbuguni , Mwachome,Mtsarani and Mazumalume among other villages with the Sub county.
Ms Lucy also confirmed that some of the relief food will be distributed to schools and special needy schools especially for candidates set to seat for their National examinations from November this year.
“We have a joint committee responsible for the relief food distribution exercise and we have agreed that our candidates must have good environment while doing their final exams,”Said Ms.Lucy.

The DCC called upon the community to plant as many trees as possible as a way of mitigating on the climate change.
“We must take advantage of the rainy season to plant trees and change our environment, due to deforestation the weather is no longer predictable, we need to reverse the effects of climate change by planting more trees, “Reiterated Ms.Ndemo.
Ms.Ndemo also challenged the community to take advantage of the short rains to plant crops that would take a short period of time mature in order to avert hunger.
“I urge all farmers to grow crops like green peas, tomatoes, beans, the Government has made available affordable fertilizer that will enable farmers grow enough food,”Posed Ms Ndemo.
At the sametime the DC warned that anyone found involved in stealing or selling of the relief food they will face legal action, saying the food must reach the beneficiaries as intended by The Government.
