In a decisive ruling handed down at the Eldoret High Court, Justice Reuben Nyakundi sentenced Mustafa Idd to 45 years in prison for the brutal murder of Emma Wanyota. The verdict marks the culmination of a four-year trial that has captured the attention of the Kenyan public.

Wanyota, a promising student at Vera Beauty College, was found mutilated and dismembered in Moi’s Bridge in 2019. The heinous crime shocked the community and sparked a demand for justice.

In his ruling, Justice Nyakundi characterized Idd’s actions as premeditated and deserving of severe punishment. He noted the brutality of the crime and the profound impact it had on Wanyota’s family and friends.

“The evidence presented in this trial leaves no doubt that the accused, Mustafa Idd, committed the murder of Emma Wanyota with a high degree of premeditation and malice aforethought,” Justice Nyakundi stated. “The severity of his actions warrants a lengthy custodial sentence to reflect the gravity of the crime and to deter others from committing such heinous acts.”

Idd, who maintained an outward calm throughout the proceedings, was granted a 14-day window to file an appeal.

The verdict was met with relief and gratitude from Wanyota’s family.

“Justice has finally been served for our daughter,” said Beatrice Wanyotta, Emma’s mother. “We are grateful for the court’s decision and hope that this will bring some closure to our family.”

The trial has also had a profound impact on Idd’s family, who have relocated from Moi’s Bridge and left behind a deserted house. The echoes of this tragic event will continue to resonate in the lives of those affected, serving as a stark reminder of the fragility of justice and the enduring pain of loss.
