Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday blamed some political leaders for fueling insecurity in parts of the Rift Valley and urged law enforcement to apply the Prevention of Terrorism Act to address rising violence, July 23, 2025.
Speaking during a security briefing covering Uasin Gishu,Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and Trans Nzoia counties, Murkomen said coordinated efforts by political figures to incite unrest must be confronted with firmness.
He criticized those who, “while holding public office, make incendiary statements that inspire violence,” calling it an attack on the unity of the nation.
“There is no justification for burning homes, petrol bombing police officers, or attacking property,” Murkomen said. “These are acts of terror under the laws of Kenya and must be treated as such.”
The Cabinet secretary emphasized that while courts must offer due process, those arrested for orchestrating violence should not be allowed to exploit legal loopholes to evade justice. He called for collaboration between the judiciary and security agencies to prosecute instigators effectively.
Murkomen also decried the surge in drug and alcohol abuse, warning that narcotics such as marijuana and heroin are exacerbating security challenges. He called on community leaders and legal professionals, including the Law Society of Kenya, to support the government’s effort in restoring order.
“Prevention is better than cure,” he said, urging a national consensus on countering social decay and criminal activity.
